Landmark Products recently completed the delivery of a new Changing Places and accessible amenities facility in Western Australia, incorporating a number of design and construction innovations focused on accessibility, durability and user comfort.

The facility includes a purpose-built Changing Places room, designed to provide a safe and dignified environment for people with high support needs, alongside a Universal Access Toilet (UAT) and additional accessible amenities.

A key feature of the project is the external architectural treatment. A perforated ventilation screen was incorporated into the design, while two-tone Maxirib cladding was used to provide greater visual interest while maintaining a practical and cost-effective solution. Internally, the Changing Places facility features aluminium wall cladding and tiled flooring, providing durable, low-maintenance finishes suited to a high-use public environment.

The project also delivered several firsts for Landmark Products. It features our first aluminium pre-hung door installed in Western Australia, with further installations now underway across the state. The Changing Places room incorporates an automated entry door, while the UAT features a manual sliding door system. Following onsite refinement of the locking mechanism, the system achieved excellent operation and provides another accessible door configuration for future Landmark facilities.

Careful coordination was also required around the facility’s electrical services. Due to compliance requirements associated with the composite roof system, the electrical layout was revised onsite in consultation with the electrical contractor. Lighting was relocated from the ceiling to the walls, with three wall-mounted lights installed, including emergency lighting. In addition to resolving the compliance requirements, the side-lighting arrangement reduces direct overhead light exposure for users positioned on the Changing Places change table.

Particular attention was also given to achieving the required floor falls within the Changing Places room. Rather than relying solely on the slab substrate, the falls were formed through screeding prior to tiling, allowing the finished floor to achieve the required drainage performance while maintaining a clean and consistent finish.

The result was particularly well received by the client’s Changing Places certifier, who noted the quality and neatness of the finished floor and the ability to achieve the required falls without the need for subsequent fixture adjustments.

The completed facility demonstrates Landmark Products’ continued focus on refining our prefabricated public amenities through practical design improvements, accessible solutions and lessons learned through onsite delivery.
