Rooftop Terrace Shelter

20 years ago Landmark pioneered the design and manufacture of pre-fabricated structures for public open space in Australia. Since then we have built a solid reputation as the only manufacturer in our field who deals directly with clients to ensure positive outcomes on complex projects. During this time, project managing the installation of our products into inaccessible environments has become a speciality of ours.

Origin Energy commissioned Jamie Durie and his team from Patio to transform the 7th floor balcony of their building, on Collins St, Melbourne, into a landscaped terrace. Due to the particular requirements of the project, they naturally approached Landmark to consult on the design and installation of the barbecue shelter.

Landmark worked with Patio on developing the design and to engineer a unique structure that can withstand the excessive wind loads, however engineering and precision-fabricating the structure was only part of the process. Additional constraints such as the inaccessibility of the site, minimal fixing depth tolerance on the roof slab, and the CBD location required an installation with little room for error.

The rooftop garden embraces sustainable green principles and also features a range of drought-tolerant native plants; a floating timber decking for yoga or tai chi; a fenced boardwalk; and open-ended cocoon – all of which were sited off the shelter. Landmark’s experienced installation team therefore had to work closely with designers Ian Barker and Associates on the time-critical installation.

Traffic was blocked on Flinders Lane in order to allow the pre-fabricated shelter to be lifted to the seventh floor via a crane on the street. The shelter was then assembled and anchored to the rooftop with 64 anchors. The resultant roof garden has been hailed a “green oasis” by
The Age.

The successful installation of the Melbourne CBD rooftop shelter is a testament to our ability to work in consultation with leading design firms, precision-fabricating structures which remain true to the design intent while meeting strict criteria for functional quality and durability.

Landmark Installations have become a nationwide leader in our chosen field, drawing on decades of experience and skill to be the first choice for clients all over Australia to Project Manage the installation of our specialty products.
